The Long Story
Greg Hanson was born on Long Island in 1989.
In high school, he wrote, produced, directed, shot, & edited feature-length horror/comedy Hey, You’ve Got Zombies in Your Backyard, producing DVDs and selling them to friends & family. It got a generally positive response from the small-time video bloggers and genre websites it was sent to. He doubts anyone knew he was 16 when the film was made.
Starting in 2007, he attended Boston’s Emerson College, where he met fellow artists and collaborators Seth Applebaum, Casey Regan, Jamie Kennedy, Josh Roth, Josh Park, and many more. Together, they produced a number of wild short films including Thy Kill Be Done, Meat Me in Plainville, Good Taste, The Monster of Mad Mooney’s Lake, and Cinemazing. At Emerson, Hanson also helped produce Ben Brewer’s feature drama Beneath Contempt.
In the years post-college, he brought various shorts to film festivals like Sitges, PiFan, Boston Underground, and Coney Island (to name a few) and continued to write and direct music videos and shorts like Sink Hole & SuperCute! - Dumb Dumbs as well as a myriad film festival ads and bumpers.
In 2012, he co-founded Brooklyn garage punk/doom surf band The Mad Doctors with Seth Applebaum and Josh Park, ultimately releasing two full length albums (‘No Waves, Just Sharks’ [2017] & ‘Snake Oil Superscience’ [2014]), two EPs (‘RIP’ [2019] & ‘Fuzz Tonic’ [2013]), and a handful of singles.
In late 2013, he founded King Pizza Records, a DIY record & tape label focused on creating community and fostering a support system for under-appreciated local and regional bands. To date, King Pizza has released more than 75 records, tapes, and compilations.
He has played drums in rock n roll bands like: Lumps, Glass Slipper (‘S/T’ album [2018]), The Rizzos, The Fucktons (EPs ‘Spring Cleaning’ [2016] & ‘Spring Break’ [2015]), Long Kill, The Pantheon as well as folk/roots rock band Andhi & The O’Neills. He sings, drums, and writes songs for biker rock recording project Power Children.
In 2019, he accepted a job as editor, post-production manager, and producer for international distributor Kino Lorber, where he currently works.
More recently, he has made music videos for Ghost Funk Orchestra ‘Scatter’ (2022), The Rizzos ‘Hambjrgers’ (2021), and The Space Merchants ‘City Lights’ (2020).
During the pandemic, Hanson co-created and continues to co-host B-movie critique/comedy podcast Video High along with hosts Casey Regan, Jamie Kennedy, and Josh Roth, produced in partnership with King Pizza and Up In Your Ears Podcast Network.
You can find his writing in various genre publications & zines including Lunchmeat, Weng’s Chop, Drive-In Asylum, and his self-published Video Armageddon.
